High Performance Kia Pro Ceed GT Confirmed

Kia officially confirmed they are working on a high performance GT version of the new Pro_ceed model. It was almost a given, because it’s not exactly a secret that Kia desperately wants to become more sporty, and also because the new Pro_ceed is too good looking to remain just a family car.

Going on sale in the Spring next year, the Pro_ceed GT is a proper hot hatch. It will be powered by the firm’s 1.6-litre turbocharged GDI engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Now, 1.6 doe not sound like a lot, but that’s the way it works these days. Car maker have to compromise on the size of the engine and rely on stuff like KERs or turbos to make up for the lost performance. Otherwise they wouldn’t meet consumption and emissions targets.

It’s hard to tell what the car would look like based on this teaser picture Kia has given us, but you can notice the large wheels, sports grille and bumpers with red accents, and some new form of ED lights which look quite interesting.

Monday Maintenance Tip: Preserve your car during long-term storage

Preserve your car during long-term storage

If you are not going to use your car for more than a month, store it properly to prevent unnecessary damage and repairs upon your return.

• Fill the gas tank to help prevent condensation from accumulating in the gas tank. Add a fuel stabilizer and drive the car around a bit to distribute the additive to engine parts.
• Wash and wax the car thoroughly to protect the finish.
• Place a vapor barrier on your garage floor. A 4-mil polyethylene drop cloth will do.
• Disengage the parking brake to help avoid brake corrosion.
• Put the car on jack stands to take the weight of the vehicle off the wheels and tires.
• Disconnect and remove the battery to keep it from draining. Place the battery on a trickletype charger. Or periodically drain the battery, using a small light bulb, and then recharge it with a low-volt charger.
• Plug the tailpipe with a rag to prevent moist air from infiltrating into it.

Kia Optima -Driven

For the last number of years Kia has really made a name for itself in the soft-roader, family-sized saloon and hatchback markets, yet they haven't quite made the same impact in the large saloon segment, or sedan market as those Yanks prefer to call it. In order to find out just why this might be, I took delivery of Kia's latest offering to this area - the Optima.

When it comes to tarmac real estate the Optima is certainly higher up there, physically it's huge and to be fair it looks the part - not overly exaggerated styling, instead it retains a clean, well proportioned & sharp design that certainly keeps its competitors on their toes - in my mind it's one of the best looking cars in its class.

The interior also has an executive feel to it. From the front seat is clear to see the whole dash design is very driver orientated. The quite vertical facia designs are reminiscent of older Saab design and although offering a high degree of spec, I do feel the interior doesn't quite live up to the quality of the exterior from a design perspective at least.

Inside you will find all the now usual trappings of any decent D segment car. Cruise control, bluetooth & air conditioning all feature in this spec as well as a neat rear view mirror mounted reversing camera that activates when reverse in engaged. It also is linked to the steering to help guide you into those tighter spaces when needed.

Powering this particular Optima is Kia's 1.7 litre diesel engine which produces an output of 134 bhp and Co2 of 133 g/km putting it into tax band B. During my week of living with the Optima I did manage to achieve a rather respectable 5.5 l/100km which turns out to be quite close to the manufacturer's claimed 5.1 l/100km (combined).

One aspect I did feel was worth giving a mention to was the comfort of the Optima, particularly on longer motorway journeys. The suspension is well setup and thankfully Kia didn't go down the route some brands have done in trying to engineer in a 'dynamic' feeling by essentially making the ride overly-firm. Crucially neither does it have a ride that will make you feel sea sick over a long journey.

So what is the rest of the Optima like? Well sitting into the rear you are greeted by quite a degree of space, and although the Kia may not be class leading it certainly has little to worry about on that front while bootspace is right up there with the likes of the Skoda Superb.

So with plenty of space, comfort and toys I'm surprised that the Optima isn't more of a hit. It may be allowing its Hyundai siblings to enjoy a bit more of the limelight but in my opinion the Optima is one of the most underrated cars in its segment. I for one would be very happy if I saw the Kia appearing on my company car fleet, and despite the slightly less that stellar interior, the Optima is a really great all round car perfect for eating those big miles in comfort.

This lucky guy got to test drive 2013 Kia Rio5 SX!

This week, we're driving Kia's 2013 Rio5 SX, the company's popular small car that starts at just $13,800. All-new in '12, Rio's re-styled exterior combines nicely with a spacious interior that makes it a popular choice amongst subcompact devotees. The "5" in the nomenclature indicates a "5-door" hatchback versus a standard sedan model, that latter which starts at $13,600.

Rio delivers what modern day consumers demand, specifically excellent fuel economy, impressive head and leg room, cargo room and the aforementioned low retail entry price. Kia also adds the 10-year/100,000 mile drivetrain warranty, an industry first along with corporate sibling Hyundai.

As noted in past Kia reviews, the South Korean-based company continues to improve each model year, competing well in classes today that in the past were unattainable. From subcompact Rio, midsize Optima, SUV Sorento to minivan Sedona, there's a model at the Kia showroom that fits all budgets.

For 2013, Rio is a near duplicate to 2012's all-new design, with just a few minor tweaks here and there. A

notable similarity is price, as Rio keeps the same cost structure as last year thus eliminating any inflationary situation.

Mechanically, this new generation's wheelbase stretches by 2.8-inches longer than the previous 98.4 inch design, while other improvements include a more rigid build, independent strut front and semi-independent torsion rear suspension, gas shocks and all the safety features today's modern automobiles offer.

On the road, expect peppy performance and an overall ease in city driving, especially parallel parking. Our top line Rio5 SX comes standard with a sport tuned suspension, metal pedals, impressive spoke alloy wheels, dual exhaust chrome tips and LED head and tail lights.

Kia's Rio5 SX for '13 now features a "special edition" standard six-speed manual transmission model, which wasn't available in the 2012 line and comes loaded for $18,650 delivered. Although an automatic is still available, I applaud Kia for bringing back a six speed manual in the upper crust sporty version, as only the entry level models came with the manuals last year. The transmission is well geared and combines nicely with its 138-horsepower 1.6-liter GDI direct injection four-cylinder engine, motivating SX from zero to 60 mph in about eight seconds flat. (Way better than the automatic's 9.4 second test from last year).

Inside, the spacious hatchback layout features comfortable seating and numerous standard amenities like Sirius Satellite, Navigation with rear camera display, USB, MP3, air conditioning, all the powers, keyless start, several auxiliary inputs, cruise, Bluetooth, tilt and telescopic, remote keyless entry, leather touches, soft touch dash and more.

Rio5 SX manual transmission editions feature low profile Hankook Optimo V-rated tires instead of 15-inchers on the entry level models. You'll also receive fog lamps, heated power folding mirrors with signal indicator, all the airbags, hill assist, traction control, electronic stability with vehicle management and a four-wheel ABS brake system all included in the base price. The only addition to the base is a $750 delivery charge.

Important numbers include a wheelbase of 101.2 inches, 2,410 pound curb weight, from 15 to 49.8 cu. ft. of cargo space, 11.4 gallon fuel tank, and a 33.5 ft. turning circle.

In summary, you'll enjoy the performance and build quality of the 2013 Kia Rio5, as the once struggling car company now produces some of the best built and reliable cars on the road. Current incentives find a $500 allowance for current military or vets; $750 for college grads or those nearing completion; and a 1.9-percent finance offer for 36 months.

If you're looking for both sporty handling and good fuel economy, you'll find just that in every Rio SX that comes off the assembly line. Thus, "Test Drive" recommends Kia Rio Sedan or Hatchback in the subcompact class.

Likes: Price, warranty, six-speed manual, fuel mileage, fuel mileage

Dislikes: Six-speed manual SX may be tough to find, a few more horses would help.
